FAQs
What is BMI?
BMI or body mass index, is a screening tool that evaluates the height and weight of a person. It places people into four weight groups (underweight healthy weight obese, overweight) which could be related to health issues. But BMI doesn't directly measure the health of a person.
What is a healthy BMI?
Healthy weight is defined by a BMI of that ranges between 18.5 between 18.5 and 24.9. In this category, a person's weight is linked to fewer health problems than the underweight as well as obese and overweight categories.
What do I need the BMI have to
A "healthy weight" category--defined as having a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9--is generally regarded as ideal. However, keep in mind that BMI is not an exact measure. For instance, it does not consider how much fat you carry or how it is distributed, factors that influence the health of your metabolism.
What do you calculate BMI determined?
The body mass index (BMI) is the body's weight divided into kilograms and squared by its the height in meters.
How accurate Is BMI?
It depends. BMI does not reveal the proportion of your weight is either muscle or fat, consequently, it's missing information vital in assessing your health risks. For example, athletes can have an excessive BMI due to their muscle mass, even if they're not obese. Furthermore, the definitions for the weight classes were based on whites, so it might not be accurate for those of different races and ethnic groups.
What can age and race affect BMI?
BMI does not distinguish between fat, bone and muscle. As such, it may be less accurate in older people, who tend to lose muscle mass and bone density as they get older. (That's why people older than 65 might benefit from a slightly higher BMI, in the range of 25 to 27.) Research suggests it is true that the BMI measure of overweight exaggerates the risk of Black people and underestimates it in those of Asian descent, which may cause unsuitable treatment and health disparities.
Are BMI recommendations identical for men and women?
The recommended amount of body fat differs between women and men. For women the ideal amount of body fat range is 20 to 21 percent. (The the average American woman has 22-25 percentage body fat.) Men's recommended amount of body fat is between 13-17 percent. (The average American man has about 17 to 19 percent body fat.)
For determining your ideal bodyweight, use this formula:
- Women 100 pounds in body mass for the initial 5 feet of height plus 5 pounds for every increment of an inch.
- Men: 106 pounds of Body weight during the first 5 feet of height plus 6 pounds for each increment of an inch.
If you're sporting a small body frame, however you can subtract 10 percent off the figure. For a large frame, add 10 percent.
